Dobó Square should be your first stop in Eger. This lively area is a popular spot for socializing, with crowds of youngsters, children playing, cyclists, and rollerbladers showing off their skills. In summer, the square takes on a Mediterranean feel.
Reconstructed in 2014, Dobó Square is now more spacious and ideal for significant events. It is the heart of Eger, centrally located near key sights and monuments.
The square features a fountain for refreshment and a monument commemorating a pivotal historical event. Sculpted by Alajos Stróbl and unveiled on August 18, 1907, the statue honors Captain Dobó and includes figures of a warrior and a woman defending against the Turks.
Take a seat to admire the Baroque architecture or enjoy various events throughout the year. In winter, warm up with mulled wine, and in spring, join the Egri Csillag Weekend for music and wine experiences.

Géza Gárdonyi Square
Géza Gárdonyi Square in Eger is dedicated to the celebrated Hungarian writer Géza Gárdonyi. The square and its surroundings honor Gárdonyi with his house, tomb, and Gárdonyi Street. You can also visit Gárdonyi Grammar School and admire six statues of the author, including a recent addition from 2014. This statue depicts Gárdonyi engaged in his favorite pastime, piping, and is set against the backdrop of Eger’s castle. Despite its relative newness, the statue has quickly become a popular photo spot.
Previously, the square was home to a fish market where locals bought fresh frog legs. Today, it’s a vibrant extension of Dobó Square and a popular venue for various events.
Gárdonyi’s most renowned novel, Egri csillagok, was published in 1899. The title translates literally to Stars of Eger, but it was released in English as Eclipse of the Crescent Moon. The story is set during the famous 1552 siege of Eger by the Ottomans in Hungary. In 2005, viewers of the television program Big Read (A Nagy Könyv) voted it “the most popular novel in Hungary.”
