Germany: Regensburg and Nuremberg Uncovered

I could think of several reasons I would recommend Germany for a visit. There is always something there for everyone! I want to take this time to introduce you to two great Bavarian cities, Regensburg and Nuremberg.

Regensburg, along the banks of the Danube River, is home to Medieval architecture.

Nuremberg has been a mirror of German history since the Middle Ages. Exciting, impressive, colorful, mighty, and tragic sums up everything about this place.

REGENSBURG – A Multi-Faceted UNESCO

World Heritage City

Regensburg received its second UNESCO World Heritage site in August 2021 for its section of the Danube Limes as a segment of the “Frontiers of the Roman Empire.”

Take a walk at the Stone Bridge, the oldest preserved bridge of its kind in Germany.

Don’t miss St. Peter’s Cathedral, the only example of French Gothic architecture in Bavaria, home of the Domspatzen (oldest boys choir in the world).

REGENSBURG FUN FACT

This place is home to the oldest sausage kitchen globally – the Wurstkuchl (Historic Sausage Kitchen) and the oldest coffee house in Germany, the Café Prinzess? Did you know that?

REGENSBURG IS BAVARIAN

Regensburg is famous for its Bavarian beer, which visitors can experience as part of a beer tasting, a brewery tour, a brewing course, or simply in a lush beer garden.

Virtuoso offers a great culinary experience that you might love to join. Taste “Wurst und Bier” in the new Regensburg Tasting Room. And there is no way to leave Regensburg without tasting Bavarian white sausages, pretzels, and the original Regensburg sweet mustard of Händlmaier while enjoying Regensburg beer with it.

REGENSBURG IS JEWISH

Did you know that Oskar Schindler from Schindler’s List lived in Regensburg after World War II? The building he lived in can be viewed from outside. Document Neupfarrplatz is a museum with underground walkways that provide a deeper look into Jewish history, highlighting the foundations of the medieval Jewish settlement in the city.

REGENSBURG IS FESTIVE

The annual Schlossfestspiele festival in Thurn & Taxis Palace courtyard is worth visiting. The princes of this palace turned the former monastery into a grand castle residence. This palace is a must-see and known to have more rooms than Buckingham Palace in London.

In December, that same courtyard host the Romantic Christmas Market, which ranks among the world’s top ten Christmas markets.

REGENSBURG IS STILL SO MUCH MORE

You can consider Regensburg as the best-preserved medieval city in Germany. Tower houses dating back to the former free imperial city add to the Italian vibe.

The surrounding area has a lot to offer, whether it be a nice boat trip to Kelheim through the scenically enchanting Danube Gorge to Abbey of Weltenburg with the oldest monastery brewery in the world. A visit to the Walhalla to see the temple built by King Ludwig I, a copy of the Parthenon in Athens.

I could think of many reasons to visit, but Regensburg being a double UNESCO World Heritage site is enough to convince me to go!

NUREMBERG – Your Journey to Historical Riches

Discover the paths along with historic Nuremberg. Known as one of the Holy German Empire’s wealthiest and most important ‘free cities.’

Nuremberg is home to illustrious artists such as the painter Albrecht Duerer, Veit Stoß and the mastersinger Hans Sachs.

NUREMBERG FUN FACT

The Nuremberg Bratwurst is smaller than most of the others? Why? Because the city’s gates were locked at night during the Middle Ages. The innkeepers found it very practical to have sausages small enough to pass through the keyhole to serve their guests in the evening. Did you know that?

NUREMBERG IS CULTURALLY RICH

Virtuoso offers a great cultural trip to Nuremberg that you might want to check out.

Begin your journey in old town covering Market place, Beautiful Fountain and Church of our Lady, then visit Sebaldus Church and pass the Altstadt Brewery and Albrecht Dürer’s House.

NUREMBERG IS HOME TO STUNNING CHURCHES

Sebalduskirche is the oldest city parish church in Nuremberg. Built around 1215 as a three-aisled Late Romanesque pillared basilica with two choirs, it will take your breath away.

Lorenzkirche boasts a grand west facade with a portal richly decorated with a statuary and rose window. The Annunciation by Veit Stoß (1518), tabernacle by Adam Kraft (1496), medieval altars, memorial plaques, and stained glass are the important works of art found in this church.
