The Great Mosque/Kebir

The Mosque was constructed on the foundations of previous religious structures, including an Early-Christian Basilica with a steep-pitched timber roof and a 16th-century Latin Cathedral. Today, the Mosque is still in use and holds great significance as a place of worship for the Muslim community on the island.

Situated in the old Turkish quarter, the Kebir Mosque is a vital place of worship for the Muslims of Lemesos (Limassol). Recent excavations in the eastern area have uncovered the architectural remains of the 10th-century Agia Ekaterini cathedral.

The Mosque received the name “Great Mosque” to distinguish it from later-built mosques. Adjacent to the Kebir Mosque is a small Muslim cemetery where notable Turks and Arabs from the Ottoman Empire are buried.
